Helping Your Little’s

On The First Day Of School

It’s that time of year again! First day of school! Yippy!

This is an exciting time of year for a lot of kids. Off to school to learn, play, and grow.

However it’s also a time of year where there is a lot of emotions coming up. With new schedules, new routines, new people, and new experiences it’. As fun and exciting as all this is it’s also an overwhelming time for our little’s. Lets be real your feeling it too.

Yes we can help them by making this a fun time. We can let them pick out their new back pack and lunch box. We can let them pick out their 1st day of school clothes. Those are all wonderful ways to help them, support them, and get them excited for this big life step.

But lets talk about how we can give them tools to actual deal with their emotions. How we can support them in experiencing and sharing their emotions or even expressing their emotions when they can’t quite tell you what they are. We see it year after year. The summer is rolling to an end it’s like these little people have this clock that says “psst everything is about to change” and all of a sudden your independent big boy is clingy and crying over spilled milk. Your queen of the yard is up all night and is pitching fits over everything.

Our little people experience so many emotions, and even though they are excited to start kindergarten and first grade and the rest. Exited to get back to school and see their friends and teachers. They are also nervous. Change is scary at all ages. Helk your even scared and nervous for them too. Who will they meet? Will everyone be nice to them? They have all these same thoughts.

Let me share three tools you can use to help you help your little work with their emotions and sooth them selves even when you aren’t with them.

I have spent years building an incredible “Life Tool Box” to help me and everyone I work with take control of their emotional state creating balance and support for themselves in everyday life and situations. To become the calm in the chaos. I have shared and used these tools with children as young as two. The children continue to use the tools, even sharing them with other children because they work.

These are super simple easy to administer tools. The best part is that they are self administered and empower you and your little to become calm! The next few weeks will be exciting and overwhelming. They will also be the weeks that shape the rest of the year and be the foundation around their idea of school. Let’s help them make it the best year ever!

The first tool is “Breath In A Box”

This tools is a super simple breathing technique used in many meditations. It is also used by S.W.A.T. Teams and Snipers (I share this because let’s be real a groups of men in armor are not going to do anything that doesn’t work. Right?)

How to do it: You are going to breath in for a count of 4 (think 1 Mississippi...), Hold for a count of 4, Exhale for a count of 4, Hold for a count of 4. Repeat this sequence at least 4 times.

You will instantly start to feel your body relax. You may experience tingling. This takes less than 5 minutes to implement (I’m being super generous with that time) yet it will allow you to settle, redirect focusing on what is most important in that moment. When teaching littles this tool have them touch each finger to their thumb to help them count the breaths.

The second tool is “Tapping” (EFT)

I’m excited to see this more widely recognized recently as I have been using it for years. It is extremely effective and incredibly easy to use. I want to show you a short cut. Who doesn’t love that?! You won’t need any scripts and you won’t need to remember anything beside 1 tapping point.

How to do it: Take and put your index and middle finger on your clavicle (doesn’t matter right to left, or left to right), now drag your fingers down to just below the clavicle into the tender spot, you will gently start tapping, breathe and tap. If words/phrases/mantras pop into your head feel free to say them in your head or aloud. Know that you can simply just tap and breath. Continue till you feel at ease.

I love this because your body already knows what’s wrong. It already knows what needs to be fixed. Essentially by doing this your hitting your reset button to calm yourself down using an acupressure point. This allows your brain and body to relax. Allowing you to come back to calm. When doing this with your little don’t over think it. If they are tapping their chest let them they will get it it may just take them a bit. Just keep tapping and breathing.

The third tool is called a “Hold”

I really love this technique as it’s one that you can use and no one will be the wiser. You can simply sit and use the tool and breath and it will just look as though you are sitting and relaxing. Because well you will be.

How to do it: you can do this sitting or standing, hold your thumb (right hand to left, or left to right, it doesn’t matter), hold and breath till you feel your pulse, then switch to your index finger, hold and breath till you feel your pulse. Now switch hands and repeat.

You can repeat this as frequently as needed. Heads up you don’t need to squeeze your finger just gently grasp. You will notice that the more you do it the faster you will feel your pulse. Which is a great sign! I like to explain the pulse to littles as the thumping or pumping they experience. I do find you need to remind them it’s not about how hard you hold the finger (it’s just a grasp) it’s about how long you hold it.

With these three tools you will empower yourself and your little. You support them in having their best school experience yet! Each of these tools is specifically chosen for their incredible abilities to aid in mental, physical, and emotional health. Also in their ease of use and that you can use them anywhere at anytime. These tools allows you to calm your amygdala, lower your heart rate, lower your breath rate, and release the calming hormones into your body. Allowing everyone and everything to settle down around you and your little. Giving you and your little focus, energy, and balance.

Here is a quick guide to these tools and a few extra (with some helpful videos too!) Here:
